Khadija bint Khuwaylid

Khadija bint Khuwaylid was a remarkable woman who lived in Mecca in the 6th century CE. She is most widely known as the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but she was also a successful and respected businesswoman in her own right. Khadija is revered in Islam as “Mother of the Believers” and she holds a high position due to her support and love for Prophet Muhammad.

  1. Successful Businesswoman: Khadija was a wealthy and successful merchant, a rare achievement for women in pre-Islamic Arabian society. She inherited her merchant father’s successful trade business and expanded it further.

  2. First Muslim: Khadija holds the high honor of being the first person to convert to Islam. She accepted the message of the Prophet Muhammad without any hesitation or doubt.

  3. Marriage to Prophet Muhammad: Khadija was Prophet Muhammad’s first wife and he married no other woman during her lifetime, which was 25 years. She proposed to Muhammad who, despite being 15 years younger than her, accepted.

  4. Mother to the Prophet’s Children: Khadija and Muhammad had four daughters and two sons together. Their most famous daughter is Fatima, who is the mother of Prophet Muhammad’s grandsons, Hassan and Hussein.

  5. Supporter of Islam: Khadija was a strong supporter of the Prophet’s mission from the very beginning. She provided emotional, spiritual, and financial support to the Prophet and helped the early Muslim community survive many hardships.

  6. Title: She was given the title “Tahira”, meaning “pure one” or “the righteous”.

  7. Revelation: When Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from Angel Gabriel and was scared and confused, it was Khadija who comforted him and stood by him, validating his experience.

  8. Death: Khadija passed away in 619 CE, a year known as the “Year of Sorrow,” as Prophet Muhammad also lost his uncle Abu Talib that year. Her death was a significant loss for the Prophet.

  9. Age at Death: Khadija was 65 years old when she passed away, having spent more than 25 years married to Prophet Muhammad.

  10. Legacy: Khadija left a profound legacy of strength, conviction, and faith. Her life is a source of inspiration for Muslims and she is often regarded as a role model for Muslim women.
